What’s The Best Company Car You’ve Ever Had?

I was browsing the classified section of an old copy of Motor Magazine from 1989 last night…

Obviously, I was first drawn to the advert for a ‘brand new’ 350 bhp Group B Ford RS200 with all available options… goodness… I wonder where that is now? I was then drawn to the ‘loving person needed” advert, where a gentleman was keen for the right kind of person to take ownership of his wife’s ‘immaculate’ 1987 Ford Fiesta 1.4 Ghia in metallic Gold with just 14,000 miles…

Then however, I was drawn to the listing from Greyfields, specialists in performance and luxury cars, advertising brand new Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth’s on contract hire at £499.00 per month, plus VAT over 33 monthly payments, no doubt aimed at business users. The thought of a tasty Sapphire Cosworth as a company car back in the day is quite appealing, but at the height of the car theft era of performance cars you wonder how many people were lucky enough to have one given to them as the insurance premiums must have been quite hefty.

In 1989 I would have been 17, driving around in my first car – a MK2 Escort of course – so a little young to be driving a brand new Ford Sierra Cosworth as company car, though within a few years I owned one myself; a lovely 3-Door Ford Sierra RS Cosworth in Moonstone blue. By 1999 I’d already had a couple of Mondeo’s as company cars and having invested quite a bit of time and effort into the company I was working for – not to mention the fact I’d sold my Cosworth – I remember asking about the possibility of something a bit more special!

There were no top-end fast fords available new at the time – year 2000 – it was the era of the all-conquering Subaru Impreza, popularised in the hands of the late Colin McRae, so with all the bravado I could muster I casually asked if they would order me a brand new facelift 1999 model year (classic shape) 4wd Subaru Impreza Turbo, preferably in silver, oh, and with a sunroof if possible… and they bloody did!

Not just that mind, I added a Hayward and Scott stainless exhaust system, upgraded air filters, and added the Cibie spot light conversion from Scoobysport. Man, that was a lovely looking car. I toured all around the UK in that, and it even made the front cover of the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club magazine after doing an article covering our exploits watching the 1999 Tour of Mull Rally in it… happy days!

Anyways… it got me thinking, what’s the best company car you’ve ever had… or maybe even the worst!?

Sure there are some great ones out there…

PS… Check out the ad for the white 1989 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth with just 1,200 miles!
