The Lotus Carlton is a legend and the kind of car that comes along once in a generation. At a time when fast four-door saloons were the preserve of BMW and Mercedes, the Carlton arrived and completely demolished the opposition. Power was generated from a 3.6 turbocharged straight six producing 377bhp coupled to the 6 speed gearbox from a Corvette ZR-1. Special Goodyear tyres were developed and the car used Group C derived AP racing brakes. However what really cemented the Carlton’s legendary status was when the outraged Daily Mail newspaper declared its unbelievable top speed of 176mph ‘too fast for British Roads’.
